studio robb: As I mentioned earlier, I was required
to come up with two of the items The Doctor
&
And, as it turned
out, it was also an excuse to get Susan out of that gawdawful get-up I had her in for the last couple of
chapters. And by putting her in something more "60s-refined" was somewhat
liberating, as Susan was finally starting to look more like, well, Susan.
The Doctor, of
course, remained in his usual attire, partly because it was already white
(loosely speaking) and mainly because that’s another "Who-ism"...The Doctor
rarely changes the clothes his current regeneration is associated with no
matter what the situation.
Page 1:
Putting the croquet
match on a remote barren piece of land in the middle of an ocean infested with
flesh eating fish was L. J.’s idea. Sadly, I never
did get the fish drawn to her satisfaction...she wanted far more teeth and less
body. But, heck, I was happy that I had managed to figure out how to make a
three-eyed fish that didn’t look like that stupid mutant fish from "The Simpsons"!
L.
J. was pretty explicit in her description of the hydro-foil, as well. It, too,
took a couple times before I "got it", but unlike the three-eyed fish, I think
it ended up being pretty much what L. J. wanted.
Page 2: The character "Tinhead"
was added by L. J. for this story, and so based on the robot’s weird dialogue
that L. J. had scripted, I wanted something that was small, unsteady when
loaded down with the Count’s "mallet bag", and cute enough for readers to feel
sympathetic towards it as Brundo bullies it around.
Basically, I just wanted to avoid a robot-looking cliché.
This
page also marked the return of the Lizard-dude (if you can call his appearance
a "return"!).
Page 3: When L. J. saw the shoddy table with
the particularly tacky prizes, she pushed hard for me to make the Lawn Jockey
the first place prize. Had I known how stupidly obsessed the world would become
about "PC" crap, I would have definitely acquiesced. But at the time it was
more important to me to be "Tacky" than offensive. In retrospect, I probably
could have also used a Pink Flamingo, but, oh well.
Page 5: The "Hope you had a nice trip,
Bilge-bag" panel marked the first time that Ace started to look like "Ace"...I
was finally starting to learn how to draw her! I wasn’t quite there, but at
last she was looking more like "Ace" instead of a Jaime Hernandez
character!
L.J. Scott: While studio robb was to come up with two of the items of the scavenger hunt, I was tasked with writing the script. As with all scripts, they end up being a starting point for the rest of the talent involved to go their own direction and do what they want, instead...
Page 2:
While I wrote the script for this page, after the first third studio robb took a stab at redoing the dialog and some of the action while keeping the same overall concept for this and the following pages. This was a very good experience for me to have at the time, as it helped me learn to be humble and accepting of those things I can not change.
Page 5: This is about where we starting getting back to some of the script. A line for Count Brundo is retained, and much of Tin-head's dialog... Really, I'm not bitter!
Page 6: The last line on this page is mine! To be fair, I do like this revision as in my original script, I didn't know what to do with Susan, so I banished her to the girl's room for most of the installment. studio robb's revision nicely keeps her involved in the action.
