L.J. Scott: I hit a bit of a bump in my life at the time I wrote this and I wanted something lite and funny to balance things out. Thus after two episodes of character building and, hopefully, thought provoking moments, we get an episode that's almost entirely fluff. While it worked for me, studio robb expressed his disappointment that it didn't follow-up on any of the bad consequences of the hunters finding the Lord's Haven. He was right, and I did take time on the next installment to have more of a balance.
Page 4: On the first draft of this, I noticed I had gotten into a bad habit; Every time a new clue appeared, the companions would come-up with some wrong interpretations and then the Doctor would come in with the right answer. So I rewrote it giving the companions the credit.
studio robb: This was the start of a bad trend for
me, in that this issue of DWIS was a month late because I was slow in getting
this chapter in to Editor Jay on time...it should have come out in *June* 1989, not
July, 1989...
And, as if
drawing six fingers on The Doctor’s hand wasn’t embarrassing enough, editor Jay
Ritchie pointed out at the end of part 4 that I had been misspelling the word
"scavenger" for the last four issues! Crap! L. J. Scott to the rescue, and she
tweaked the story to make "Qui’Ouder the "SCAVA-nger" union’s membership manager. Personally, I thought it
was unnecessary...I was used to having to live with *glaring* errors. But it was
nice of L. J. to bail me out, and it did add an interesting twist to things...
Page 4: I’m a little embarrassed by the "Ace in
the tree" scene...as I remember it, L.
J.’s script simply called for the three to be lounging in a large
arboretum to accent the "TARDIS is bigger on the inside" aspect. I decided to
throw a little humor in by having Ace fall out of the tree...and to do it, I,
well, pretty blatantly copied a couple of panels from "Love and Rockets" as a parody...so Jaime Hernandez, if you’re
reading this, I sincerely apologize! But it was done out of "Love and Respect",
at least! (That, and I was already past my deadline,
not that that should *ever* be an excuse)...
