- Shinichiroh Takada's sirius scars is back!
- this was my first attempt at a manga that was unknown outside of Japan --- meaning i had "free-reign" to make my own decisions about character development, at least as far as speaking english went.
there are definite signs of "coming up the curve", so to speak. the first volume and most of the second were scanned directly from the "phonebook anthology", Shonen Ace, so the quality of the pages weren't very good to begin with. and then there are the "rookie" aspects: i was using Paint Shop "Poh" for the first few volumes (i was too lazy to try to learn Photoshop, until i found out that it's the "industry standard"), i was working with pages at lower esolution, and i was constantly saving things as .jpgs instead of .tifs...you will certainly see a vast improvement with the overall look of things in volumes 3 & 4...
- for those new readers, this is the story of a teen-age boy named Takeru Tachibana and his struggle to recover his sister Sayoko from a "cyborg dogfight circuit". When takeru was 10-years-old, his town was bombed during an enemy air-raid in which his parents were killed and he was mortally wounded. sayoko, cut deep with "survivor's guilt" and a "co-dependent" inability to deal with living alone, rashly sells her brain to the albion corporation run by a mysterious ceo named Véltare Marçeau in order to pay for a risky surgical operation that takeru may or may not survive. her brain is placed in a cybernectic body, the process of which essentially eliminates the brain's memories and hightens its aggression. her new identity is The White 13 aka "The Ice Doll" and for the next five years she is placed on a dogfight circuit fighting other cyborgs in gladiator-style extravaganzas where she eventually becomes the grand champion and obtains the rank of "sirius"...
the story begins shortly after Takeru has liberated his sister from the dogfight circuit only to discover that, outside the cicuit, Sayoko's brain has a "self-destruct" mechanism and that she is dying. Takeru has one week to find a way to cure his sister or return her to the circuit or she will die. adding to the problem are the "dogged" efforts of the albion corporation's efforts to recover "their stolen property" as well as a cast of character's who all have their own scars of some sort...
This story was originally serialized in the "telephone manga book" Shonen Ace, and it consists of four volumes total...
Shortly after my translation of Part 2 of sirius scars, vol. 1, i learned that the author/artist, Shinichiroh Takada, uses the english title of "Cicatrice of the Sirius" for his series. i was like, "what the heck is `cicatrice'?" well, it turns out "cicatrice" means "blemish" or "scars".
even so, i've decided to stay with my title of sirius scars because of the double meaning it conveys...plus "scars" is a lot more recognizable than "cicatrice"...
just remember that's just me being lame, and that Cicatrice of the Sirius is Mr. Takada's "prefered" translation of his title, Shiriusu no Kizuato...
One last thing: due to the subject matter, language used, and graphic violence contained within, readers are encouraged to use some discretion when reading this manga!
